Quozl's Telstra ZTE F165 HSDPA Mobile Phone on Linux

Scope: Linux with Telstra ZTE F165 HSDPA Mobile Phone.

Update

When you plug in the F165 a panel appears on screen which says "New Mobile Broadband Connection", and "This assistant will guide you through setting up a new mobile broadband connection ..."

You can cause the same panel to appear again by doing this:

System -> Preferences -> Network Connections

Clicking Forward reveals a list of providers. After the sequence is done a new entry is created in the list of connections in the Network Connections panel.

I've not tested this, as I don't have a data plan enabled on my F165, and so it would cost me dollars per kilobyte or something equally bad.

Summary

• charges fine via supplied USB cable from a Linux system,
• not identified by current kernels, no USB driver loaded automatically, but when forced to be adopted by the usbserial module it presents three USB serial devices, one of which responds like a modem with AT command set,
• works with bluetooth on KDE, can send and receive pictures (JPG), sounds (MP3), and business card (VCF) files,

Known Problems

• no way yet to send or receive text messages found, perhaps the modem interface will do that, advice welcome,
• phone reboots if sent a VCF file via bluetooth, even if it is exactly the same as a VCF file that it provided, however this does not happen if the VCF file is sent by another F165 phone or by a MacBook, so it seems likely to be related to either the Linux bluetooth implementation or the USB bluetooth dongle,
• phone bluetooth service provides contain an AVRCP target, but no idea how to use it from Linux, advice welcome.
